This Health and Safety Policy sets out how our gardening services are delivered in a safe, responsible and professional manner. It applies to all gardeners, contractors, temporary workers and anyone else engaged in gardening work on behalf of the company, as well as to clients and visitors who may be affected by our activities.
The company is committed to providing gardening services that protect the health, safety and welfare of gardeners, clients, visitors and the wider public. We will identify and manage risks associated with garden maintenance, landscaping, soft and hard landscaping tasks, and all related activities carried out on clients properties and communal outdoor areas.
We undertake to continually improve our health and safety performance, reviewing this policy regularly to ensure it remains relevant to our services and current best practice.
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that appropriate resources, procedures and training are provided. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, briefing staff, monitoring compliance and addressing unsafe practices immediately.
All gardeners and workers have a duty to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions during gardening work.
Follow all safety instructions, training, risk assessments and method statements provided.
Correctly use tools, machinery, personal protective equipment and safety controls.
Report hazards, near misses, accidents and any defective equipment to management without delay.
Clients also have responsibilities to cooperate with reasonable safety measures, keep access routes clear where possible and inform us of any known site hazards such as unstable structures, underground services or aggressive animals.
Before starting work, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify hazards and implement control measures. These assessments will consider tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, planting, tree work within our competence, weed control, use of ladders, use of power tools and machinery, and movement of materials.
Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to all gardeners. These may include controls on working at height, safe manual handling of heavy items such as bags of soil, compost, paving or plant containers, and procedures for working near roads, pathways, shared access routes and neighbouring properties.
All tools, machinery and equipment used in gardening work will be selected, maintained and operated in a way that minimises risk. This includes lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws within our scope, blowers, pressure washers and hand tools.
Equipment will be inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be unsafe. Only trained and authorised personnel may use powered equipment and any machinery requiring specific competence. Instructions from manufacturers will be followed at all times.
Guards and safety features must never be removed or bypassed. Tools are to be transported and stored safely to prevent harm to staff, clients and members of the public.
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and used whenever hazards cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and protective clothing suitable for the gardening task and weather conditions.
All gardeners are responsible for wearing the required personal protective equipment, looking after it correctly and reporting any loss or damage so that items can be repaired or replaced.
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying and moving loads such as soil, plants, slabs, timber, tools and waste. We aim to minimise manual handling risks by planning work, using trolleys, barrows and mechanical aids where possible, and avoiding unnecessary lifting.
All staff will be instructed in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to work within their physical limits, ask for assistance with heavy or awkward loads and avoid repetitive strain by varying tasks where possible.
Where gardening services involve the use of chemicals such as fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides, or fuels and oils for machinery, we will assess the risks and follow safe handling, storage and disposal procedures.
Only trained and authorised staff may handle such substances, following product labels and safety data information. Substances will be stored securely, away from children, pets, watercourses and foodstuffs, and will never be decanted into unlabelled containers.
Many gardening tasks require working at height, for example from ladders or small access platforms for hedge cutting, pruning or gutter clearance connected with garden maintenance. These tasks will be planned carefully.
Ladders will only be used for short-duration tasks and will be checked for defects before use, secured and positioned on firm, level ground. Alternative access equipment will be used where safer and reasonably practicable. Gardeners must not overreach, and must maintain three points of contact when using ladders.
We recognise that gardening work is often carried out in variable weather and near members of the public. Work will be planned to take account of adverse weather such as high winds, heavy rain, ice, extreme heat or poor visibility. Where conditions are unsafe, work may be postponed or adapted.
Work areas will be organised to protect clients, neighbours, visitors and passers-by. This may include using signage, barriers or cones, managing vehicle movements carefully, and keeping paths as clear as reasonably practicable while work is ongoing.
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of ill health arising from our gardening work must be reported to management as soon as possible. They will be recorded, investigated and used to improve our controls and training.
Gardeners will be briefed on emergency procedures relevant to the site, including actions to take in the event of a serious injury, fire, chemical spill or sudden illness. First aid equipment will be available, and at least one member of the team will be familiar with basic first aid arrangements.
The company will ensure that gardeners receive appropriate induction and ongoing training in health and safety matters relevant to their tasks, including safe use of equipment, manual handling, use of chemicals, working at height and incident reporting.
Health and safety information will be communicated clearly to all staff, and feedback will be encouraged so that concerns can be addressed. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in our gardening services, equipment, working methods or applicable standards.
